What's in this episode?

Content:

This week’s podcast is with Dominic Norrish, the Group Technology Director of United Learning Multi Academy Trust of 60 Schools in the UK. We hear from Dominic on

  • the importance of driving value for money in procurement
  • the importance of scepticism when it comes to edtech
  • the importance of change management when it comes to implementing new projects
  • the top 3 problems in existing education
  • and Dom’s message to edtech startups

Is this a tale of Bah Humbug or a message of hope?

Plus hear developments on the horizon from the department of business, energy and industrial strategy in collaboration with department for education in the UK.

Sample Quotes:

It’s very important to be highly sceptical about educational technology’s ability to do anything really

Can this help do something we are already doing slightly better?

Jon Coles (Group CEO) - He took a risk appointing me

School business managers are very very influential stakeholders in every school

Education technology: to do it well requires extraordinary teaching

Even Prensky would say that whole phrase has been hijacked (on digital natives)

I don’t know why people would enter the Edtech market if they weren’t ready for an uphill struggle

What I would say is: make sure your product does solve a genuine educational problem

Please, no more websites on simple maths problems

For everything that supports English, there are ten things that support Maths

The Uk Edtech scene is definitely focused on export and quite rightly

The Edtech Podcast supports the mission of WomenEd: #WomenEd is a grassroots movement which connects existing and aspiring leaders in education. Even though women dominate the workforce across all sectors of education there still remain gender inequalities, particularly at senior leadership level. The situation regarding BME leadership is even more dire considering the fact that the student population is becoming increasingly diverse. This situation is clearly unacceptable and rapid change is needed. #WomenEd will therefore campaign and use its collective power to make improvements, so that there is a more equitable balance in terms of gender and ethnicity at leadership level across all sectors of education. http://www.womened.org/

What's in this episode?

Content:

This week we’ve got the second of a two part series on Websummit. In this episode you can listen to Lizzie Edwards of the Digital Learning Programme at the British Museum on engagement, Kaoru Wang of Teach II on the paradox of Asia vs. West educational approaches and aspirations, and finally Kamesh Flynn of the Western Cape Government of South Africa on making the impact at early years. If this is the first podcast you’re listening to in the web summit series, make sure you go back and check out the others with interviews from UNHCR on education for those with refugee status, plus how can chatbots help education and edtech startups from Russia, Nepal and Greece

Sample Quotes:

Lizzie Edwards, Manager Samsung Digital Learning Programme at the British Museum

It's about micro-disruptions: how can families use the technologies that they already have, that they are using to navigate the world around them, to explore the collections as well.

Kameshvari Flynn. Deputy Director in the early childhood development directorate for the department of social development, Western Cape

Karin Wong, Founder of Teach II:

Teachers in Asia are really respected which is not the case in the US. We lost the definition of what a teacher is.

Hello from Detective Dot (www.detectivedot.org  Code: PODCASTSROCK)
Bett Awards: http://bettawards.com/finalists/
Ian Fordham moves to Microsoft
#Nordicedtech16 (Danish Technical University, Peer Grade, CanopyLab, Labster, Kahoot)

PISA outcomes: http://www.oecd.org/pisa/

Content:
In this first episode of a two part series on edtech trends at Websummit, I speak to MIT Professor Brian Subirana, Director of the AutoID Laboratory and Nikos Tzagkarakis of iYouth Lab and Tania Roquette of Full Fabric on the value of technology in higher education and how to avoid edtech being a chase to the bottom
I speak to Head of Innovation at UNHCR, Andrew Harper on what the tech community and the edtech community can do for the 65 million currently displaced and Benjamin Merritt of It’s Alive on the role of chatbot technology in educational support services, and we get to know one of the many new Phygital services where digital and physical overlap in the form of Magikbee and Hugo Filipe Ribeiro.
Word from Full Fabric (learn.fullfabric.com/podcast)

Sample Quotations:

Brian Subirana (5:30 - 21:00):

  • Most edtech technology is useless today, simply course cutting technology that lowers value and costs; education needs to be drastically reinvented or it will become a tourist attraction very much like the Grand Canyon or La Sagrada Familia.

Nikos Tzagkarakis of iYouth Lab (21:00 - 35:00):

  • ‘We want to build an ecosystem of innovation whilst studying.’
‘One student has the software and one student has the hardware. They connect their data through iYouthLab to facilitate their vision and research project.’

Tania Roquette of Full Fabric (35:00 - 40:00):

  • How can we use gamification in the application process?
Most universities rely on really legacy technology which makes the experience for the candidates really frustrating

Andrew Harper, UNHCR (40:00 - 52:00):

  • We’ve got to start looking at a modular learning experience. Technology is critical, because there is no other way to get learning experiences to the 10s of thousands of people.
  • I’m in desperate need of good ideas. We can’t be bureaucratic about it, we need to be engaged with legitimate sustainable ideas that can be easily scaled up.
  • Education is key
  • Imagine the potential of 65 million people that have the opportunity to learn

Benjamin Merritt of It’s Alive (52:00)
Students have a lot of questions; sometimes they don't want to ask their teachers.

We believe a chatbot has a main purpose; to supply to specific questions. We are all human. We can't reply to all questions.

Magikbee and Hugo Filipe Ribeiro (59:00)
Kids are losing touch with physical toys.

Intro:
Nordic Edtech Conference: http://nordicedtech.squarespace.com/
Content:
Interview with:
Maarit Rossi, Global Teacher Prize Nominee & Founder, Paths to Maths
Covering:
The new Finnish curriculum and what you need to know about it
Showcasing why maths is relevant and how maths can solve real world problems
Challenging the lack of VC investment in female-led businesses

Sample Quotations:

The new curriculum puts much more attention to the student being the centre of learning.
Finland: we are a research-based education.
It's my mission. I want to change Math education, not just in Finland, but in the whole world.
Interdisciplinary Math is very important.
8 students out of 10 are solving mathematics based on memorising. This really shows what is happening in math classes all over the world. We have to change it.
Learning in the classroom is not only working with the computers or tablets, it’s working together.
The first learning games have been made for consumers and now I am talking about schools
It's very important what kind of principal you have in your school and what kind of system you have in your country.
About 50 years ago Finland was one of the poorest countries in the world and now we are one of the richest countries. We don't have oil, but we have the education.
We have to give the environment of learning to students.
We need a big(ger) investor to bring the project to the next level.

Michelle Thomas is speaking at the TES Leaders Summit at Bett 2017 and organising TeachMeet Resolution both in January 2017, London.

What's in this episode?

Intro 0-2.30:
Nordic Edtech Conference: http://nordicedtech.squarespace.com/
Forward schedule - give your vote on which topics should be included or sign up to sponsor: theedtechpodcast@gmail.com
Content:
Interview with:
Michelle Thomas, executive head teacher of the New Wave Federation
Neill Melville, CAS master teacher, federated assistant head teacher, New Wave Federation
The concept of Federation
The role of the Executive Head Teacher
How to get mentorship or support when there's no Executive Head teacher structure in place
Being a connected educator
Suggested apps for use in the classroom
Ensuring tech for good and not extending the attainment gap

Sample Quotations:

Michelle Thomas
Federation is about schools working together, achieving more, sharing leadership and talents.
I don't want my staff to see themselves in a bubble of perfection.
I found bright children completely disengaged with learning
I like systems in place.
It's a tough life being a teacher.
Being a head teacher is quite a lonely job. The hardest thing is the loneliness. Search networks is useful. Having mentors is very important as a head teacher
I am a big believer of learning from other people. That's the beauty of Federations and Academies. Leadership makes the difference.
I started to see iPads as the hook. We put them in the classroom. It did create a spark of interest in children.
We wanted the iPad to make learning independent and get them to collaborate, work together. Take learning to another place, that we teachers couldn't.
Don’t use an iPad if it's much quicker on pen and paper! Think about the use of the technology, don’t have it replacing something. Because that's not going to take it anywhere.
An appraisal system around the use of technology was key for us, not an extra add-on.
Show-casing was a quick-win that allowed us to create a competent digital team. They showed what they were able to do with technology in the classroom.

Neill Melville

  • Teach computer science in schools. Not only how to use technology but also how to create technology.
  • Coding? It's important. It is the thinking aspect of it that it is important, computational thinking can be used in other subjects.
  • Computer science should be taught in a cross curricular way.
  • Technology gives you the chance to show your work to a wide audience and children want to excel.

Download the YOUGOV School Leaders Benchmark Report discussed in this episode

What's in this episode? Interview with former Assistant Headteacher, Rob Eastment, Client Services Manager, Firefly Learning on new YouGov survey findings on senior leaders, schools and data: what do they really want and currently experience?

Subjects covered:
Parents evenings and reports - can the experience be improved?
Looking at data in parallel industries: aviation and healthcare
Data, the cloud and security
Some example stats:
47% of SLT disagreed that their schools were using their existing technology successfully
80% of SLT said they would welcome daily access to student grades, attendance and departmental performance

Sample Quotations:

Private schools do monitoring achievements of students, they are monitoring it for their own purposes as opposed to the need to feed the information to county council and government.
States school teachers are very much under the cosh when it comes to the paperwork. Stuff that actually is getting in the way of what you want to do in the classroom.
The biggest issue with data collection is that somebody has to collect it. You need time to collect it, or you need a process that allows you to collect it easily. And you have to have a very good reason for collecting it.
The trick is being able to collect the data so that the teachers aren’t having to do more to hand it over to you.
The student’s performance is only part of the equation. There's the other aspect which is: what happened that got the student to bring about this performance?
That approach to be able to learn from what the best are doing rather than we are watching to see what you are doing wrong
John Hattie talks about visible learning and visible learning being a two way street. I’ve got to be seen to be teaching, the students have to see that I am teaching them as much as I have got to see they are making progress.
A lot of students are tied to this idea of success, the importance of success means that failure is massively stigmatised. And yet it’s an important part of that process. And if they can see the data and they can understand it, that's fine.
There is a perception that IT and computers are the universal panacea. And if I buy enough computers and if I buy enough iPads everything is going to be fine.

In Japanese schools the test score is everything. Learning should be tangible.
Students can express their heart, their thoughts making LEGOs.
You can learn project management with LEGO.
Students started to work independently, that’s wonderful!
I.C.T. means I can be connected with students 24 hours.
Old teaching style is just lecturing students. Sit down, be quiet. I’m teaching you have to be still. But like that it’s not fun.
You should have fun in class.
Japanese students are very dependent on some things like repetitions, companies’ names. They have to follow some kind of specific track.
Students are always evaluated within the school, but this world is very wide!

Colin Hughes, Managing Director, Collins Learning
Tim Oates, Group director of assessment research and development, Cambridge Assessment
David PerksFounder and principal, East London Science School; director, the Physics Factory
José Picardo, Assistant principal, Surbiton High School

Sample Quotations:

Harley Richardson
-Which do we need the most in the classroom: textbooks or technology?
-Textbooks or technology? We could just say a little bit of both and go home
-Many parents are concerned that mobile phones are allowed in schools

Tim Oates
-What constitutes high quality material?
-Understand the role and the function of traditional textbooks, understand what they have meant for hundreds of years to understand what we should do now
-Systematical control over textbooks is critical in reform
-Textbooks support a whole range of functions
-The best teachers around the world are those who are supportive of best quality textbooks
-In Finland textbooks still are seen as steering mechanism for education -
Textbooks provide a schema. They provide the shape of a subject. Digital performs differently

David Perks
-If textbooks are the answer, what is the question?
-What does a good textbook look like?
-Websites don͛’t last, their content is ephemeral. The whole premise in which digital has been designed is ephemeral and not long-standing
-If you want to take notes use a pen, don͛t use a laptop because it goes in much better if you use a pen
-When kids use technology is not the same as us using it -Google doesn’t teach, we do

Jose Picardo
-Textbooks and technology, rather than textbooks or technology. Both are useful, both facilitate learning
-Does a textbook need to be in print form? Cannot it be in digital form?
-Digital resources are dismissed often for the wrong reason
-What students prefer may not always be what͛’s best for them
-Spaced studying, interleaving topics, frequent load testing have improved teaching and learning
-Pairing texts with interactive graphics to help conceptualisation
-Featuring sound and video-recordings are great for languages teaching and learning
-The focus should be on how can we make these resources work better
-What learners prefer to do often goes against what cognitive psychology tells us is best

Colin Hughes
-Digital is dynamic, is connected
-Why 14% of time in UK classrooms use any kind of digital materials at all? Maybe 14% is about right actually. For the rest of the world is about 4%
-Adapted learning platforms are going to be unbelievably useful
-It͛’s about defining what can that particular technology do that the other can͛’t
-The use of printed revision guides is way stronger
-Textbooks are not a substitute for quality teaching or indeed teacher knowledge

 Susanna Goldschmidt
-Comparing textbooks with tech is like comparing a theological treatise with an encyclopedia
-How could a textbook evocate for the plurality of options that now face subject teachers?
-Digital media lend themselves brilliantly to expanding horizons
-Digital activities encourage students to engage actively in what they͛re learning
-Technology offers tools capable of liberating teachers from drudge work allowing them to focus on the real business of teaching
-Hybrids, digital textbooks called ͚techbooks͛ combine the substance of textbooks with the attributes of digital
School is not just about learning what the curriculum stipulates should be learned. It͛s also about expanding horizons, transformative experiences.
-Textbooks or Technology? Both
